Notes:
1776 - On 29 June, Virginia became the Commonwealth of Virginia with its own Constitution, independent from Great Britain. On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.

1777 - On 16 December, Virginia was the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.

1777 - Kentucky County was formed from a portion of Fincastle County, Virginia.

1780 - Kentucky County was divided into Fayette County, Jefferson County and Lincoln County, and Kentucky County became extinct.

1788 - On 25 June, Virginia became the 10th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.

1792 - On June 1, the Commonwealth of Kentucky became the 15th state in the United States of America, with the following nine counties that were formerly in Virginia: Bourbon, Fayette, Jefferson, Lincoln, Madison, Mason, Mercer, Nelson and Woodford.

1792 - Shelby County was formed from a portion of Jefferson County, and the town of Shelbyville was founded as the county seat of Shelby County.

1795 - Franklin County formed from portions of Shelby County, Mercer County and Woodford County.

1799 - Gallatin County formed from portions of Shelby County and Franklin County, and Henry County formed from a portion of Shelby County.

1820 - Franklin County received land from both Shelby County and Owen County.

1824 - Oldham County formed from portions of Shelby County, Henry County and Jefferson County, and Spencer County formed from portions of Shelby County, Bullit County and Nelson County.

1833 - Shelby County received land from Oldham County,creating Shelby County's present day boundries.
