Notes:
1763 - Great Britian acquired Florida from Spain in a trade for Cuba, and divided it into two colonies: British East Florida and British West Florida.

1783 - Spain regained control of both Florida colonies from Great Britian as a result of the treaty ending the American Revolution.

1821- Spain ceded both Florida colonies to the United States, and the following year they were combined into the Florida Territory.

1845 - On 3 March, Florida became the 27th state in the United States of America.
