Notes:
1701 - A settlement called Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit was founded by the French in the territory called the Royal Province of New France.

1763 - New France was ceded by France to Great Britian.

1774 - Present day Michigan became part of the British Province of Quebec.

1791 - The Province of Quebec was split into Upper Canada and Lower Canada, and present day Michigan was located in Kent County, Upper Canada.

1794 - Great Britian ceded present day Michigan to the United States, and it became part of the Northwest Territory.

1796 - Wayne County was created.

1803 - Wayne County was added to the Indiana Territory when Ohio became a state.

1805 - The Michigan Territory was created, and Detroit became the capital of the Michigan Territory and the county seat of Wayne County.

1806 - The city of Detroit was incorporated.

1837 - On 26 January, Michigan became the 26th state in the United States of America. Detroit was the capital of Michigan until it was moved to Lansing in 1848.
