    In order to stop Indian depredations, the Colony's General Assembly established several forts 
    • Major Lawrence Smith was appointed to commanded 111 men out of Gloucester County at a fort near the falls of Rappahannock River, present day Fredericksburg. These forts helped to exasperate the people in Bacon's favor, and Major Smith, who led the "trained bands" of Gloucester the next year against the rebels in Bacon's Rebellion, was deserted on the field by his troops.
