  	A very memorable blizzard occurred
  	"It started with rain on the evening of the 11th, turning to snow by morning and accompanied by gale winds that drifted the snow badly. It was not the heaviest snow I have seen, but the worst in its effects. The entire coast was blocked for weeks, and while we had a good supply of food and fuel stored in the house and cellar, we had no water except what Mother made by melting snow, and no toilet facilities as there was no indoor plumbing in the homes of the poorer class of people. For two weeks, we had no milk, eggs, butter or fresh meat as there was no transportation. The snow in the front of the house was piled up to the second story windows, and the court between two rows of houses which contained the one hydrant of water and the toilet houses, were eight feet deep in the  snow. Father and I dug tunnels back and front trying to get out, the hydrant was frozen and the toilet houses were blown over so as to make them useless. This was a good lesson which Father drove home to us children 'to learn to prepare in advance of any emergency', because we would have suffered terribly only for Father's preparation." - John T.   	"Later on as we grew older and street cars lines became more numerous our Parents took us to many places for family picnics, these werealways very enjoyable. There were quite a few places conveniently located, such as Lemon Hill, Georges Hill, Strawberry Mansion, Memorial and Horticulture Hall with a goodly display of tropical trees and plants, a collection of Paintings, Art objects, Mineral specimens and relics and were all visited on occasions. These trips were made in Open type street cars drawn by either 1 or 2 horses and the trip was slow. The seats were crosswise in the car, and a running board on each side to enter or leave, and to enable the conductor to collect the fare, which was 5 cents, children under 12 free. Later, in the Nineties, we had buses with seats on top and drawn with 3 horses abreast, all of these were very pleasant riding in good weather, but if caught in a thunderstorm, you certainly were wet." - John T.   	"Mechanical devices for the house were then very little known, and fresh vegetables were unknown during the long winter months, usually from the beginning of October to the end of March. We had a wooden ice chest to store about a week's supply of milk, butter, eggs and meat which you bought from the farmer at the door. Mother used to can vegetables, berries ad fruit during their regular season, so that we always had the work of preparation as our share. In the spring when the berries were ripe, Dad would get us up at 3 o'clock in the morning on Sundays or Holidays, walk 5 miles into the country to pick wild strawberries, cherries and peaches. After filling our baskets, we would return home with about 25 to 30 quarts of fruit which was duly canned and stocked away. In winter when we had our sandwiches and pie, we usually enjoyed them because we had worked for them and the trip out were not only enjoyable and healthy, but also educational, because we became familiar with all kinds of trees, birds and animals." - John T.
