2715 Major Lawrence Smith was appointed to commanded 111 men out of Gloucester County at a fort near the falls of Rappahannock River, present day Fredericksburg. These forts helped to exasperate the people in Bacon's favor, and Major Smith, who led the "trained bands" of Gloucester the next year against the rebels in Bacon's Rebellion, was deserted on the field by his troops. SMITH, Maj. Lawrence Sr. (I4037)

2716 Many sources have stated that Major Robert HARRIS' wife, Mary, was the daughter of Col. William CLAIBORNE and Elizabeth BUTLER. The eminent genealogist, John Frederick DORMAN, in his book Claiborne of Virginia, 1995, states that this relationship cannot be proven. Mr. DORMAN's 16 Jul 2014 letter to me elaborates on his conclusion. - W. Winston COCHRANE IV, 2014 Family: HARRIS, Major Robert / CLAIBORNE, Mary (F1317)

2717 Margaret HAMILTON, the sister of Mollie STEWART's mother, had promised her sister just before her death that she would take care of the newborn Mollie. After Margaret married Elias FLETCHER in 1843 at age 18, she wanted to raise Mollie, then 5, but the uncle Mollie was living with in Kentucky did not want to give her up.

Margaret arranged to take Mollie from her uncle and travel down the Kentucky River on a steamboat to visit other relatives for the day. On their return in the evening, Margaret ordered the boat not to stop at the wharf where the uncle was waiting for Mollie. Margaret then took Mollie to live with she and her husband in Palmyra, Missouri, raising her along with her own three children.

2720 Maria's mother married John HOPE in 1794 when Maria was 3 years old, and John and Mary HOPE had several children. In records after her mother's marriage, and after Maria's own marriage in 1813 to James BAGHURST, Sr., Maria's maiden surname is sometimes recorded as HOPE. There was no legal or formal adoption process at that time. HILL, Maria (I1529)

2722 Marriage performed by H. E. ELLIS and witnessed by his wife, Mrs. H. E. ELLIS, and by Mildred V. RABE, the groom's daughter by his first wife. It is curious that they married in Paris (Bourbon County) while living in Woodford County. Her parents printed a wedding announcement, so there was not an attempt to keep it quiet.

2747 Mary Ann Moore's first husband, William Henry Claxton, Sr., died in 1897. (Source: Well documented murder.) In 1909 she married Henry Clay Tye. (Source: Tennessee marriage license.) Tye's first wife, Elizabeth (Bishop) Tye, died in 1904. (Source: Gravestone)

Mary Ann is listed as having born 9 children in the 1900 Census, and 10 children in the 1910 Census.

In the 1910 Census, the Henry Clay Tye household includes Henry and his wife, Mary Ann, 4 of Henry's sons who are +10 years of age from his first marriage, Henry's son Henry L. Tye who is 4 years old. Living next door are 2 Claxton children +10 years of age from Mary Ann's first marriage who are listed as Henry's step-children, and Dewey Claxton, age 7, also listed as Henry's step-son.

Dewey Claxton's mother is assumed to be Mary Ann (Moore) Claxton because he would be her 10th known child per the 1910 Census. His father is unknown because Mary Ann's first husband was dead. It is doubtful that Henry C. Tye was the father, as 2 years later Tye had Henry L. Tye out of wedlock and gave him his surname, and Dewey had his mother's married surname.

Henry L. Tye's mother is unknown because (1) his birth date of 12 July 1905 on his delayed birth certificate is in agreement with his age in the 1910 Census, (2) Elizabeth (Bishop) Tye died in 1904, and (3) Mary Ann (Moore) Claxton Tye's 10 children per the 1910 Census are known.

2754 Mongo INGLES became his security. INGLES was a fellow Scotsman, educated at the University of Edinburgh, and hired in 1694 as the Grammer Schoolmaster at William and Mary University when it was being formed. He was obviously friends with Andrew GEDDES, who was an Under Master at William and Mary beginning in 1697.

2757 Most of the information available on Vincent HOBBS Sr., his parents, his wife and his children, is Family Tradition passed down without the documentation of direct, original sources. If my sources cited an original document, I have included that citation in my source reference.

Parents:  Most traditional information has Vincent born circa 1720 in Dorchester, Dorset, England, to Nathaniel Barrye HOBBS. I have not found any original sources for this.

Wife:  Most traditional information has Vincent married to Mary Hannah SHELBY circa 1742, in either Maryland or Virginia, and that her father was Evan SHELBY Sr., who emigrated from Wales to Maryland and Virginia. I have not found any original sources for this marriage. Several land deeds in Lee County, VA in 1793 and 1796 are signed by Vincent and his wife, Hannah HOBBS. A later deed is signed by Vincent and his wife, Mary HOBBS.

Children:  The source document for the children that I have included is a 1926 newspaper article about a descendant of Vincent HOBBS. Some other information suggests that he also had children named Job, Thomas, Nathaniel and Ruth.

Adding to the confusion of wife and children, is an application for a Revolutionary War pension by Job HOBBS in 1859 at the age of 100, with admitted poor memory, stating his parents were Vinson HOBBS and Ruth THOMAS, and that some of his brothers and sisters had the same names as Vincent HOBBS' children. There is no other documentation confirming this, and this may have been another HOBBS family.

2774 On 7 Oct 1780, a key battle in the Revolutionary War was fought at  King's Mountain in South Carolina, just south of the North Carolina border. Major WINSTON along with 7 other officers of similar rank, led 1,400 men in the defeat of British Major Patrick FERGUSON who was leading 900 Americans loyal to England. The battle lasted just 65 minutes, being completed before British General CORNWALLIS, in nearby Charlotte, NC, could reinforce FERGUSON.  This was the first major victory against the British in the southern states, and caused CORNWALLIS to cancel a campaign in North Carolina . Instead, he retreated from Charlotte back to South Carolina. This loss was the beginning of the end, and CORNWALLIS surrendered at Yorktown, VA 12 months later.

Major WINSTON's last action in the battle of Guilford Courthouse in Greensboro, NC on 15 Mar 1781, was also successful. His remains were moved to the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, and a statue of him was erected there.
WINSTON, Major Joseph (I3117)

2775 On Sunday the 13th of May, he and his wife, Ella, and his infant daughter, Ella Marie, "motored" to visit his brother, Claude RUSSELL, on his farm north of Paola, KS, a distance of about 10 miles.

On the next Sunday, Walter and his family, along with his brother Ray and his wife, "motored" to Lawrence, KS to visit Walter and Ray's parents, John and Martha RUSSELL. The distance was about 55 miles. On the return trip to Osawatomie they had to abandon the car on account of mud. The newspaper article did not reveal where the car was abandoned, how they got home, or how they retrieved the car!

Then on the 4th of July, Walter with his wife and infant daughter, "motored" to Independence, MO, and then on to St. Louis, MO the next day to visit Ella's parents, John and Mary Ann EBERHARDT, and to show them their new granddaughter, Marie. The distance was over 300 miles, and the car's top speed was 40 to 45 miles per hour. Ella's sisters, Miss Mary EBERHARDT and Mrs. BOYER [not Ella's sister] with son Willie, joined the RUSSELL family on the return trip. They stopped in Marshall, MO overnight before continuing on to Osawatomie. It was reported that the roads were fine, and they had a delightful trip without accident or mishap.

2776 On that date he resided in York County, witnessing the Will of Robert MEEK (or WEEKS) - York County Will Book, 1647. This is the first documentation of him being in Virginia.
