1502	His murder received coverage in newspapers nation wide, possibly because of the notoriety of the Hatfield-McCoy feud in Kentucky and West Virginia which was still ongoing after 30 years. Source:  The Atlanta Constitution, Atlanta, GA, June 3, 1897, Page 1, column 6. Headline:  "Claxton Shot From Ambush. Assassination Grew Out of a Feud Between Two Families." "Chattanooga, Tenn., June 2 - (Special) - A special from Huntsville, Scott county, says Judge William Claxton, of Campbell county, was killed by some unknown parties on the headwaters of Rockhouse fork at the foot of Braden mountain, in Scott county, this morning. It is generally believed that the murder was the outcome of a feud between the Hughetts and Claxtons of that neighborhood. It seems that Claxton had shot and killed Elswick Hughett from ambush not very far from the same spot about two months ago. Claxton was a justice of the peace in Campbell county at the time, and was under bond at Huntsville on a charge of having taken part in the lynching of William Murphy, a little over a year ago. It is generally believed that this is not the end of the matter. Claxton's brothers [Caswell, 31, and James, 26] say that Henry Hughett, brother of Elswick Hughett, is the murderer. It seems Claxton had killed Hughett for testifying that he (Claxton) had made in criminating statements about  participating in the lynching of Murphy. Constable Pollmore, who was with Claxton, is reported to have taken to his heels. The affair, it is understood, grew out of a feud between Claxton and the Hughetts of that neighborhood. Claxton shot Elsewick Hughett from ambush in the same neighborhood about two months ago. Claxton was indicted and under bond for the murder of William Murphy, by lynching, and was also under bond for killing Hughett. The Claxtons, it is thought, will accuse Henry Hughett of the killing of William Claxton, and more trouble is expected." 1503	His obituary in 1805 states he was aged "77 years and 11 months" at his death, which calculates to a birth date of December 1727. This is believed to be in error because his father did not marry his mother until 1728, after his first wife died earlier in 1728. Also, because Col. John SYME II was a half-brother with a common mother to the famous Patrick HENRY, many publications on HENRY have documented SYME's birth as 1729. So Col. 1505	His personal property and debts owed to him (£214-8), excluding land, were distributed in three parts. The first third to his wife "Margrett", and the second third in equal parts to his five younger sons (Henry, Charles, John, Robert and Thomas). The final third was to pay his debts (£6-7-2) and funeral expenses, after which went £10 each to Robert and Thomas "for their better preferment and theire good educacoun", and the remainder to be divided equally between his wife and the five youngest sons. In addition he left "one great garnar standing in my Barne att Stonedge" to his eldest son, Lawrence. There was no mention of his two daughters. Those in debt to him included his two older brothers, Henry and Robert, his son Lawrence and his son's father-in-law John Halstead. His wife and son Lawrence were the executors. Katherine DEBNAM:  On 9 August 1711 in Essex County (Deed & Wills Book #12, p 426), Robert TALIAFERRO III, grandson of Robrt TALIAFERRO I and Katherine DEBNAM, sold to Augustine SMITH, 200 acres of land that was originally patented to Charles GRYMES on on 4 September 1654 in Lancaster County, and renewed on 8 October 1657 and 23 November 1661. This land was located south of the Rappahannock River, and subsequently in the following counties as they were created: Old Rappahannock in 1656 and Essex in 1692. Ann DEBNAM:  On 20 June 1726 in King George County (Deed Book #1, p 361), Samuel HOYLE, son of Edward HOYLE and Ann DEBNAM, sold to Samuel SKINKER, 300 acres of land that was half of the land originally patented to Charles GRYMES on 4 September 1654 in Lancaster County, and renewed on 8 October 1657 and 23 November 1661. This land was located north of the Rappahannock River, and subsequently in the following counties as they were created: Old Rappahannock in 1656, Richmond in 1692 and King George in 1721. Mary DEBNAM:  On 6 August 1692 in Essex County (Book #1, p 40), John SMITH of Ware Parish in Gloucester County, son of Maj. Lawrence SMITH Sr. and Mary DEBNAM, sold to John TALIAFERRO of St. Marys Parish in Essex County, son of Robert TALIAFERRO I and Katherine DEBNAM, and brother-in-law of John SMITH, 200 acres of land that was originally patented to Charles GRYMES on on 4 September 1654 in Lancaster County, and renewed on 8 October 1657 and 23 November 1661. Next I give Hermit's Retrait [sp] to my Son Ovid mecrakin, with that part of the Reaservey [sp] thereunto belonging, from the said Divels ally brench [sp] extending from said Branch up Portomock [sp] River. "Next I will to my Son Seneca Mecrakin that Tract of Land that is commonly known by the name of Linnsford Bottom, or the Sugger Camp. "Next I bequeath to my Son William Mecrakin one Lot of Land on the South Side of Market Street in the Town of Bath  warm springs. Vergil is to fall hair [sp] to his choise [sp] of Two Horses & Two Cows at the same time, but if he is not of age at that time, it is my desire that my Executor may let them out on Shears or Rent, as also my Plantation till Vergil is at least come to the years of Twenty. "Know all men by these presents that I Virgil McCrackin of the county of woodford and state of Kentucky do declare this to be my last will and testament in manner and form following viz: "I give and bequeath to my wife Martha three negroes viz: Sophia and her child Charlotte and Maria, also all the household furniture which belonged to her before her marriage, which negroes and household furniture is to be considered her right of Dower to my Estate. I give and bequeath to my Daughter Polly one negro woman named Jenney and her son Charles, a feather bed and furniture, one horse and saddle worth one hundred Dollars. I give and bequeath to my Daughter Martha one negro woman named Vina and her son Peter, one feather bed and furniture and one horse and saddle worth one hundred dollars. The horse and saddle to be paid them by my Exc. at their arrival to the age of 14 years. I give to my son Cyrus one negro woman named Phillis and  her son Sam, bed and furniture. I give to my son George two negro boys Dick and Spencer and the interess of the negroes I have of my Fathers Estate at my mothers death. I give to my son Virgil two negroes Mary and Rachel and one negro man named Sam now in the population of Henry Caldwell, and further I give to my son Cyrus one negro woman named Aggy. I wish all my landed Estate to be sold and equally divided among my children at their marriage or at their arrival to the age of eighteen years of the girls and twenty years of the boys giving two years credit for all my lands except the place I now live upon which I wish to be kept for the purpose of raising my family. It is my wish that my interest in the saw mill and tract of land thereunto belonging should be sold at two annual payments. The plantation whereon Henry Nall now resides not to be sold unless absolutely necessary for the purpose of paying my debts until my youngest son arrives to the age of twenty one years. That the negroes devised to my children to be kept together for the purpose of supporting and schooling them, but is my wish that my Executors should dispose of every foot of land for the purpose of paying my debts before the negroes should be sold. The bond I have upon Brother Cyrus in surveyor Williams hands to be sold at two years credit. The bond Seneca McCrackin has upon Father's estate for three hundred acres of land after giving credit for two fifths, Ovid and my parts to be sold at two years credit. And I do hereby appoint my Brother Ovid, Andrew McKnight and Nathaniel Hart Exc. of this my last will with full power to carry the same unto as full and complete effect as I would do myself given under my hand this [blank] day of [blank] Nov. 1812. 1516	His will was probated in the April 1829 court. "In the name of God amen. I Cyrus H McCracken being weak in body but of Sound mind and memory do make and ordain this as my last will and Testament . "1st. It is my will and desire that all my just debts be paid and that to enable my Executor herein after named to do so. It is my desire that he sell and convey all my land for such price and to such person or persons as he may think proper. "2nd.  give and bequeath to my Brother Virgil McCracken should he return to this country to live the following negroes towit: Phillis, Sam, Isaac, John and Isaac alias Henry to him and his heirs. But should he die without issue then I give and bequeath said negroes to my Brother George and his heirs. "3rd. I give and bequeath to my Brother George McCracken a note which I hold on Henry Wilson for Two hundred and fifty Dollars. "4th. It is my will and desire that my Brother Virgil pay to each of my Sisters Martha and Polly the sum of Fifty Dollars in in consequence of the bequest I have made him. "5th. It is my will and desire that my Executor make a liberal compensation to my highly esteemed friends Mr. Charles Norwood and Mrs. Norwood for their great kindship and attention to me in my illness. "6th. It is my will that after the payment of my just debts as aforesaid and the Compensation of my friends as aforesaid out of the Sale of my land that the balance of my Estate be equally divided between my Brother George McCracken and my Sisters Martha and Polly and their heirs.
